Skin Tightening With Sofwave
No one likes to see loose or sagging skin on the face and neck. Jowling, or loose drapes of skin that hang off the jawline, might a natural part of the aging process, but this can be extremely distressing for both women and men. While a facelift or a neck lift is a fantastic procedure to eliminate loose skin, it is still a surgery requiring anesthesia, incisions and downtime. Many patients don’t have the time, or don’t like the permanent nature of surgery.
For those that are looking for options to treat non-invasively, Sofwave is an excellent option and it is available in our office in South Pasadena, just 15 minutes north of downtown Los Angeles.

How does Sofwave work? How can it help with fine lines and wrinkles?
The Sofwave system generates ultrasound energy which produces a fractional heating effect in the skin. The platform is designed to deliver the ultrasound energy and heat at the right depth so that there is no damage to the skin surface or underlying structures. The heat stimulates the formation of new collagen and elastin in the dermis (the middle layer of skin). Collagen and elastin are the proteins that give the skin its smooth, youthful appearance. With age, the amount of collagen and elastin in the skin decrease, leading to the formation of fine lines and wrinkles. By stimulating the growth of new collagen and elastin, the Sofwave treatment leads to tighter, firmer, smoother skin with a reduction in wrinkles and fine lines.
How long does a typical Sofwave treatment last? How many treatments will I need?
A typical Sofwave treatment for the full face lasts around 30-45 minutes. This means you can fit it into your busy lifestyle, perhaps even schedule a “lunchtime facial.” The treatment itself is easy to perform and pain-free with no downtime, meaning you can return to your active lifestyle immediately afterward.
Many patients see noticeable improvement in fine lines and wrinkles after just one Sofwave treatment. However, some patients may require an additional treatment, depending on the amount of skin damage. Dr. Shieh will examine your skin and advise you about the number of Sofwave treatments you will need to get optimal results.
How Long Does It Take To See Results From Sofwave?
The results of a Sofwave treatment may not be visible immediately. This is because it takes the body some time to regenerate new collagen. You will notice some improvement in skin quality about 2 weeks after your treatment. You will continue to notice ongoing improvement in the smoothness of your skin in the 3 months following your Sofwave treatment. Clinical trials have shown that many patients need only one treatment to see noticeable results.
What Does The Sofwave Treatment Feel Like?
As the ultrasound energy is delivered, patients may feel warm sensations on the skin. Sofwave is comfortable with the application of a topical anesthetic just prior to treatment Post treatment, there are no sensations and there is no need to apply special care to the skin Patients can resume their daily skincare routine immediately after treatment.

Today, people are spoiled for choice when it comes to skin rejuvenation cosmetic procedures that treat fine lines and wrinkles. Chemical peels, dermal fillers, Botox, laser resurfacing, and facelift surgery are just a few of the treatments can make you look younger. But not all treatments can reduce facial lines and wrinkles in a non-invasive manner with proven effectiveness and minimal downtime. Here’s a quick overview of how Sofwave compares to other common cosmetic procedures for skin resurfacing.
Botox is an injection treatment that is effective in reducing wrinkles and lines. However, side effects may include pain, bruising, and swelling at the injection site. Also, you need to return for repeat injections every 3-6 months. If the injections are performed by an inexperienced provider, Botox can lead to a droopy eye or a frozen face. In contrast, Sofwave does not involve needles or pain, and one or two easy treatments are enough to give you noticeable results.
Chemical peels are cosmetic treatments in which mild acids are used to slough off the top (damaged) layer of skin. Peels can cause redness, swelling, and scabbing in the treated area. Depending on the type of peel, you may need a week or more of recovery time. There is also a risk of infection and changes in skin color. Sofwave treatments do not carry any of these risks and are associated with zero downtime.
Dermal fillers are substances that are injected into lines and wrinkles to smoothen them. Common side effects of filler treatment include pain, swelling, redness, and itching at the injection site. Rarely, facial filler treatment can lead to infection, leakage or migration of the filler material, granuloma (nodule) formation, and injury to blood vessels and nerves. Sofwave is a completely non-invasive treatment without any such side effects or risks.
Laser skin resurfacing treatments use powerful laser energy to remove the upper layers of skin and reveal healthy new skin underneath. There is some downtime required after laser treatments. Also, laser treatments are less effective on some skin types. They may not be recommended in the summer months because laser increases sun sensitivity. Side effects of laser resurfacing can include burning, pain, swelling, and skin discoloration. Sofwave, on the other hand, is suitable for all skin types and can be done at any time of the year.
A facelift is a surgical procedure that carries all the risks of surgery, including bleeding, infection, and risks of anesthesia. Potential complications include damage to nerves and temporary or permanent numbness. Common side effects of a facelift include pain, swelling, and bruising. There is a considerable recovery time required after facelift surgery. In contrast, you can go back to normal activities immediately after your Sofwave treatment.

Immediate results can be seen as soon as a week following the Sofwave treatment. Collagen regeneration can sometimes take up to 12 weeks, so patients should expect to see ongoing improvements in the 3 month period after treatment.
