What is the FotoFacial RF (IPL+RF)?
Wishing you could erase brown spots, shrink pores or wipe away wrinkles without requiring cosmetic plastic surgery? Perhaps you’re sick of aesthetic dermatologic skin care treatments that simply haven’t been effective [or aggressive enough] in reversing skin damage and stalling the aging process. What if you were to find out that there is a therapy out you could reap the benefits of both treatments in one non-invasive procedure? RejuvaYou is proud to offer non-invasive FotoFacial RF treatment on our list of quality skin rejuvenation therapies. FotoFacial RF treatment is quickly becoming one of the most popular skin rejuvenation therapies in North America.
Approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration in 2002, FotoFacial RF treatments combine the powers of Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) and Laser and/or Radiofrequency (RF) technologies into one effective, gentle pulse to target problem areas on the face, neck, hands or body. These two technologies together have proven to be far more effective in correcting skin discoloration, clearing up blemishes, adding firmness and reducing the appearance of fine lines than conventional laser treatments. In fact, the FotoFacial RF is 50 percent more effective as a procedure while also providing results in fewer sessions.
What Can The FotoFacial RF (IPL+RF) Help With?
A FotoFacial RF treatment is a great procedure to improve the overall appearance of your skin, and while it’s best known for its success in correcting skin discoloration, it may also be used to treat the following conditions:

- Rosacea
- Blemishes
- Acne
- Large pores

What are the pre-care instructions?
When you first come to in to discuss a treatment plan with one of our doctors, you will be asked to disclose of all of your current medical conditions and prescriptions as some, when coupled with laser treatment, can pose serious risks to your health.
For instance, you will be unable to receive treatment if you are currently pregnant or on a prescription for Accutane. You will also be asked to stop taking any medications that cause sensitivity to light, such as certain antibiotics, one week prior to receiving treatment. This would also include any topical prescriptions that remove layers of the skin and/or lighten the skin, like retinoic gels and skin lighteners. Special care is necessary for those who experience cold sores, as treatment cannot be performed during an outbreak. Finally, you will be asked to avoid sunlight or tanning prior to your treatment in order to prevent further skin damage.
What happens during the FotoFacial RF treatment?
Once the skin has been properly cleansed on the day of your treatment, a topical anesthetic will be applied to the area being treated. Thirty minutes will be given for the skin to absorb the anesthetic before rinsing. The skin will then be thoroughly cleaned and sterilized with alcohol before a conductive gel is applied to the area being treated to help guide the radio frequency.
Once all of the prep-work has been completed we will begin laser treatment. It will feel as though a rubber band is lightly snapping your skin as the laser pulses over it. This sensation is painless and made even more dull by the anesthetic that was applied prior to treatment. The procedure usually takes 45 minutes, but could be shorter or longer, depending on the condition of the area being treated.
For a typical treatment plan, it is recommended to have three FotoFacial RF treatments four weeks apart.
What are the after-care instructions?
For a few days after a FotoFacial RF procedure, your skin will be red and tender. During this time you will be encouraged to apply aloe vera and arnica to the treated area to promote proper healing. You will also need to apply sunscreen promptly after your treatment, as your skin will be extremely vulnerable to the harmful effects of the sunlight. To ensure optimal results and prevention of further damage, you will be advised to sunscreen daily.
What to Expect After a FotoFacial RF Procedure
You will experience increased redness and tenderness in the days following your treatment. You may notice brown spots or freckles resembling coffee grounds rising to the surface of your skin in the days following your procedure. This is just a normal and integral part of the healing process as deeper layers of skin work their way to the surface, revealing softer, smoother and brighter skin.
During this time of healing, it is very important that you do not scrub or exfoliate the area of skin that was treated as it may cause serious harm to your skin.
Please contact your doctor immediately if you start to develop blisters or swelling after your treatment.
Unfortunately, due to the natural aging process, results from the treatment are unable to last forever, but results are considered to be long term, as the treatment will repair the skin to a younger healthier state where the patient will continue to age from that point forward. However, you can maintain smooth, radiant skin by receiving regular FotoFacial RF treatment every six months after your initial round of treatment (three sessions in three months).
